⚡ Quick Summary

How to Repost on Instagram (The 3 Options)

1. To Your Story (Native)

Tap the paper airplane share icon > tap "Add to story". Disappears after 24 hours.

2. Remix a Reel (Native)

Tap three dots (...) on a Reel > tap "Remix". Adds your reaction side-by-side or after.

3. To Your Grid (Regram)

Save original media using our tools, tag creator, and give full attribution in line 1 of caption.

Method 1: Repost Any Post or Reel to Your Story

This is the fastest, 100% native way to amplify content while automatically crediting the creator:

  1. Navigate to the post, Reel, or photo you want to share.
  2. Tap the Paper Airplane (Share) icon beneath the post.
  3. In the bottom row of actions, tap Add to story.
  4. The media will load inside your Story editor. You can pinch to resize, add commentary text, stickers, or polls.
  5. Tap Your story in the bottom left to broadcast.

Viewers who tap the sticker in your story can click directly through to the original creator's profile and post!

Method 2: Native Remix for Instagram Reels

If you want to react, add commentary, or duet with a viral Reel, Meta’s built-in Remix feature is the best tool:

  • Tap the three dots (...) on the right side of the Reel.
  • Select Remix.
  • Choose between With original video (splitscreen side-by-side) or After original video (plays their clip first, followed by yours).
  • Record your clip, edit audio levels, and share to your Reels tab. Instagram automatically attributes the original creator in the header.

Method 3: Reposting to Your Permanent Feed Grid (Regramming)

Theme pages, curators, and brands often repost high-performing content onto their main feed to build niche audiences. Because Meta does not offer a native "regram" button, follow this clean professional workflow:

1
Obtain Permission: Send a brief DM to the creator: "Hey [Name], love your post on [topic]! Would love to repost this on our page with full tags and credit to you. Would that be okay?"
2
Prepare High-Res Media: Check original post media using our free Photo Viewer or use native Instagram Remix & Collab features.
3
Tag the Creator: When uploading to Instagram, tap Tag people and tag their handle directly on the photo/video so they receive a notification.
4
First-Line Caption Credit: Place clear attribution at the very top of your caption: "📸 Video credit: @username — Check out their page for more incredible content!"

Why is the "Add to Story" Button Missing?

If you tap the paper airplane and cannot find "Add to story", it is usually due to one of three reasons:

  • Private Account: The creator’s profile is private. Instagram prohibits public story reshares of private content.
  • Reshares Disabled: The user disabled story sharing in their privacy settings (Settings > Sharing and remixes > Allow resharing).
  • Branded Content / Audio Restrictions: Certain sponsored brand posts or regional copyright locks prevent story re-broadcasting.

FAQ

Instagram Reposting FAQ

Does Instagram have an official "Retweet" or "Repost" button for feed posts?+
No. Unlike X (Twitter) or LinkedIn, Instagram does not have a native one-click button to repost another user’s photo directly onto your own permanent grid profile. You can either share it natively to your 24-hour Story, Remix it as a Reel, or download and re-upload the media with explicit permission and attribution.
Can you get banned for reposting someone’s content without permission?+
Yes. If the original copyright owner files a DMCA takedown notice with Meta, Instagram will remove the post and issue a copyright strike against your account. Accumulating multiple copyright strikes will result in a permanent account suspension.
How do I stop other people from resharing my posts to their stories?+
Go to Settings and privacy > Sharing and remixes > toggle off "Allow others to share your posts to stories". Once turned off, other users will not see the "Add to story" button on your posts.
Can I repost a post from a private account?+
No. Content from private accounts cannot be shared to stories or reshared by anyone outside of their approved followers, as Meta strictly respects account privacy barriers.
