⚡ Quick Walkthrough

How to Add Music to an Instagram Feed Post

Tap the (+) Create button > choose Post > pick your photo or carousel > tap Next > on the final details screen, tap "Add music". Search for a trending song, slide the waveform to the desired 5-90 second hook, tap Done, and hit Share.

Step-by-Step: Adding Music to Photos & Carousels

Adding music to still photos transforms a static image into an engaging post that qualifies for recommendation in the audio page feeds:

1
Prepare Your Post: Open Instagram, tap the (+) button at the center bottom (or top bar), and select Post.
2
Select Media: Pick a single image or tap the multi-photo icon to select a carousel (up to 20 images). Apply any desired filters, then tap Next.
3
Tap Add Music: In the final details screen (where you write captions and tag people), tap the Add music bar located right below your location tag.
4
Browse or Search: Scroll through the "For you" trending suggestions, or type an artist, song title, or genre into the search bar.

Selecting the Perfect 5-90s Audio Snippet

Once you select a track, Instagram opens an interactive audio waveform editor:

  • Clip Duration (The Number Circle): Tap the small circular icon on the left (showing "30" by default). You can choose any length from 5 seconds to 90 seconds. For single photos, 15 to 30 seconds is optimal. For lengthy 10+ slide carousels, extend it to 60 or 90 seconds so the sound doesn’t loop too quickly.
  • Scrubbing the Waveform: Slide the colored audio bar left and right. Instagram highlights high-energy chorus drops with pink dots along the timeline.
  • Lyrics Display: Feed posts do not render animated on-screen lyrics (that feature is exclusive to Stories and Reels). On feed posts, the artist and song title appear gracefully beneath your username.

Fixing "Song Unavailable" & Business Account Limits

Why Can't My Business Account Access Pop Music?

If you see error messages like "This song is currently unavailable" or you only see obscure instrumental tracks, your account is configured as a Business Account. Record labels do not allow commercial businesses to use copyrighted songs in commercial posts without individual sync licensing.

How to fix it in 30 seconds:

Go to Settings and privacy > Creator/Business tools > Switch account type > Switch to Creator Account. Creator accounts maintain all analytics, insights, and messaging tools, but gain access to the complete consumer music library!

How to Use Custom Audio & Original Sounds

Found a viral voiceover or custom remix on another creator’s Reel that isn’t in the commercial music library?

You can save and reuse the original audio natively inside Instagram:

  1. Tap the scrolling audio track name at the bottom of the Reel.
  2. Tap Save Audio to bookmark it to your Instagram audio library.
  3. When creating your new Reel or Post, tap the Audio icon and select Saved to use the audio track with full attribution.

FAQ

Instagram Post Music FAQ

Can I add music to multi-photo carousel posts?+
Yes! Instagram fully supports music across carousel posts up to 20 slides. The chosen audio track plays continuously in the background as viewers swipe through your carousel slides.
Why are popular commercial songs missing from my music library?+
If your profile is set to a "Business Account", Meta’s commercial licensing agreements restrict your music picker to royalty-free tracks in the Meta Sound Collection. To unlock the full pop music library (Taylor Swift, Drake, etc.), switch your profile type to "Creator" or "Personal".
Can I change or edit the music after publishing the post?+
No. Once an Instagram feed post or carousel is published, Meta does not allow you to swap, edit, or delete the attached music track. You must delete the post and re-upload if you want a different sound.
How long can the music snippet be on a photo post?+
On static photo and carousel posts, you can select an audio duration anywhere from 5 seconds up to 90 seconds. The default duration is usually 30 seconds.
